Setting Up a Mail Handler

Compose Email, wherever it appears in Recruiting, only works if your browser has a default mail app set up to handle mailto: links - otherwise clicking it won’t do anything. Not everyone needs to do this, but the steps are here for whenever you do. If you’re on Chrome and haven’t set this up yet, use either option below to make Gmail your handler.

Option 1: Through Chrome Settings

  1. Close any open Gmail tabs.
  2. Go to chrome://settings/handlers in your address bar.
  3. Remove any entries already listed there.
  4. Make sure “Allow sites to ask to become default handlers for protocols” is turned on.
  5. Close that settings tab.
  6. Open Gmail. A diamond icon should appear at the right of the address bar - click it and choose Gmail as your default email handler. If you don’t see it, quit and relaunch Chrome, then try again.

The diamond icon in Chrome's address bar, next to the zoom, password, and bookmark icons, that appears once Gmail can be set as your default mail handler

Option 2: Through the Browser Console

  1. Go to mail.google.com.
  2. Open Chrome DevTools - press F12, or use the browser’s three-dot menu, then More Tools, then Developer Tools.
  3. Paste the following into the Console tab and press Enter:
navigator.registerProtocolHandler(
"mailto",
"https://mail.google.com/mail/?extsrc=mailto&url=%s",
"Gmail"
);
